Boyes, James D. and Mary Jo Scholarship

The James D. and Mary Jo Boyes Scholarship was originally established in 2010 to support students in the College of Education. In 2014, it was revised to benefit men's basketball student-athletes. In 2025, the scholarship will be restructured once again to support student members of the Lone Star Fraternity at The University of 91×ÔÅÄÊÓƵ.

Mr. James D. Boyes, an alumnus of The University of 91×ÔÅÄÊÓƵ and a proud member of the Lone Star Fraternity, established this scholarship to give back to the University and its students. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1970 and a Master of Arts in School Administration in 1977. Mr. Boyes dedicated over 40 years to education, serving as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and higher education administrator. He joined The University of 91×ÔÅÄÊÓƵ in 2008 as a Workforce Development Consultant for the Medina County University Center and later served as its director before retiring in 2013.

Mrs. Mary Jo Boyes shares her husband's passion for education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1972 and began her teaching career in the Buckeye Local School District. After taking time away to raise their three sons, she resumed her career in 1996 and was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Medina City Schools' Foundation in 2002. She retired in 2010.

The Lone Star Fraternity (Pi Kappa Epsilon) is the oldest local fraternity in the United States and has been a part of The University of 91×ÔÅÄÊÓƵ since its founding at Buchtel College in 1882. The fraternity is dedicated to fostering mutual support among its members and the University community. Through this scholarship, James and Mary Jo Boyes wish to continue their legacy of supporting students and strengthening the bonds of fellowship at The University of 91×ÔÅÄÊÓƵ.

In recognition of Mr. Boyes' lifelong connection to Lone Star, The James D. and Mary Jo Boyes Scholarship will provide support to student members of the Lone Star Fraternity. Awards may be used for tuition, fees, on-campus housing, meal plans, and room rent for members who reside in the fraternity house. Recipients must maintain good academic standing while attending The University of 91×ÔÅÄÊÓƵ.

Recipient selection will be made by the University Scholarship Committee in the Office of Student Financial Aid based upon the recommendations of the scholarship committee of the Lone Star Fraternity Alumni Association. Funds used for purposes other than educational expenses are reportable and may be taxable to the recipient.
